The Inconvenient Truth about Domestic Violence and Child Abuse

Of the approximately 30 readers who have previewed True North – The Shocking Truth about “Yours, Mine and Ours”, two of them were very uncomfortable reading the book. The other 28 felt that reading the book had helped them in some way that was unique to their lives.  They thanked me for writing the book and let me know they had new insights they hadn’t had before.

But what about those other two?  What makes a person uncomfortable with the discussion of domestic violence and child abuse?  I really don’t know.  The two people who were uncomfortable didn’t want to talk about it.  It may be that there is a personal experience in their past that is too difficult for them to face.  It could be that they suffer from a serious case of wishful thinking and just don’t want to believe that domestic violence and child abuse are as prevalent in American society as they are.  Whatever the reason, refusing to acknowledge the problem isn’t going to reduce the pain and suffering of women and children who are attacked in their own homes in this country – every nine seconds.

Raising public awareness of the problem can help people to think about their own lives and perhaps bring a moment of pause.  I hope you will join me in furthering the discussion and putting attention on solutions to this plague.
